We were called to Spruce Meadows Park in Calgary, Alberta, for a unique lifting project: repositioning a decommissioned post-war battle tank that had remained untouched for years. Although some internal parts were missing, the tank was still very heavy and had become deeply embedded in the ground, a problem made worse by Calgary’s freeze-thaw cycles. This combination made the lift especially challenging.
Since the tank was no longer drivable (yes, we asked), it required specialized crane services to move it safely and efficiently.
To tackle this job, we deployed our 200-ton Demag AC160-2 all-terrain crane, perfectly suited for heavy lifting and complex rigging operations. Jay, our skilled veteran crane operator, expertly managed the lift, while our rigging specialists, Nate and Beebs, handled the counterweights and load security.
Initially, the tank weighed over 100,000 lbs due to the natural suction caused by years of ground embedment. After breaking this seal, the weight dropped to roughly 90,000 lbs, a vivid reminder of how environmental factors impact every lift.
