130 ton Hoisting a Transmission Tower in Whitecourt, Alberta
Last March, our team journeyed to Whitecourt, Alberta, to assist our partners at Arctic Arrow Powerline with relocating a transmission tower. With our extensive experience in the powerline industry, McIntyre Crane & Rigging boasts a strong reputation as a reliable partner in transmission construction and maintenance. We utilized our 130-ton Tadano ATF 110G-5 and our 50-ton Manitex 50155SHL for this project. The 50-ton crane was responsible for handling the lines, while the 130-ton crane lifted the tower and transferred it to the new pedestal. Our team members Jay, Brock, and Crikey Davis played crucial roles in operating the cranes and assisting with rigging, ensuring the success of the project.
The site was located just east of Whitecourt, near Edmonton, and presented challenges due to its position at the bottom of a steep hill and the snowy weather. Our team carefully assessed the site to guarantee that our cranes could access the area without any difficulties. Despite the obstacles posed by the sloping terrain and snowstorm, our skilled operators safely navigated the cranes to the site, showcasing their expertise and dedication.
The following day, our team faced cold weather and heavy snowfall as they prepared to work. After a brief safety meeting, operations began. The new pedestal was 60 feet away from the old one, and the tower stood at 130 feet tall. With the assistance of the Arctic Arrow crew, the transmission wires were carefully delined onto a clamp attached to Brock’s crane while Jason’s crane handled the top of the tower. Once the tower was released from its pedestal, Jason hoisted it onto the new pedestal, and the ground crew swiftly secured the tower and reattached the wires.
After the tower was successfully relocated, our team packed up and headed back to Calgary. We’re proud to have completed the project ahead of schedule and without any delays.
